#12797 Introduction to Visual Phonics

Dr. David Krupke, Clinical Assistant Professor at St. Ambrose College will be joining us for an Introduction to Visual Phonics! Hope you can join us!

Children's brains are hard wired for sound but not for print. When they enter school, a great deal of emphasis is placed on developing the ability to map sound to print. This process involves learning the letters of the alphabet and associating each letter with the common sound(s) letters can represent. The best outcomes are seen when foundational literacy skills build from sound awareness/recognition and pairing of sounds and letters. Stable, consistent sound-letter knowledge is essential to decoding and encoding (spelling). Since English is a semi-transparent language, there is variability in the sound (phoneme) letters or letter combinations represent. Some words don't look like they sound, and some do. For some children, mapping sound to letter combinations (graphemes) represent the sounds of English. See the Sound-Visual Phonics (STS-VP) is a multimodal system of hand shape cues and corresponding written symbols that represent 52 sounds of the English language. STS-VP makes the mapping of sound to print more concrete and visible. Participants will learn about See the Sound-Visual Phonics and how its use can aid students in developing sound mapping skills necessary for reading and spelling.
