Math Workshops

#9206 Hands-On Math Workshop
Welcome to the home of games, graphs and educational goodies. This is a workshop of mathematical munchies - ideas into which children can sink their teeth. Many instructional aids, which emphasize thinking, will be demonstrated and experienced along with a series of mathematical learning games. The instructional aids used in this workshop can be assembled by the teacher or student and will increase interest and participation. The class will include "hands-on" computer experience as participating teachers explore internet sources for web quests, scavenger hunts, lesson plans and Power Points for teaching math. One grad credit is available for an additional $100 through Aurora University. Day one of this workshop will be held from 4:30 - 8:30 PM and Day Two will be from 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM.

#9228 Research Based Interventions for Mathematics
This workshop will focus on how children learn mathematics and researched-based methods for instruction. We will create and practice developmentally appropriate interventions for struggling students that focus on the core areas of the mathematics curriculum. The workshop will include strategies to improve thinking skills and basic knowledge in number sense, computation and place value. These activities could be used in small groups for children identified by RtI testing. Cathie holds a Master's degree in math education from WIU and has taught in the primary grades. She is well known in Illinois math circles having served on the ICTM Board of Directors and classes at WIU, was visiting math educator for NCTM and Educator in Residence for ISBE. He has served on the Boards of both ICTM & NCTM and has taught 1st & 3-6 grades.

NEW! Best Practices to Improve Student Performance in Algebra I & II
This series consists of 3 sessions that focus on best practices to improve student performance in algebra. Each session stands alone, but the 3 sessions are also presented as a series. Attend all 3 sessions for one price of $250.00.

#9203 Session One - Set the Vision for Best Practice Mathematics and Math Curriculum-Examine and Trim plus Active Learning Training
For the first session, the critical question is how to develop a classroom where more students are motivated and engaged. The number one challenge of teaching algebra, reported by algebra teachers in a national survey, is teaching unmotivated students. This workshop will set the vision of an involved classroom, train for the careful use of time, practice active learning strategies according to the latest brain research and set the need to trim curriculum to more manageable and essential topics using the, newly approved by ISBE, Common Core Standards. Active learning strategies will be taught, and the curriculum needed to prepare for state tests will be examined in detail. Participants should bring any curriculum documents they have, as well as their principal textbook(s).

Location: ROE Moline
Cost: $100.00 for 1 session
CPDU's: 6
Presenter(s): Randy & Sue Pippen
Audience: Teachers of all levels of Algebra teams are suggested but not required
