#9224 Effective Activities for Building Vocabulary
Vocabulary is the royal road to comprehension. Robust language leads to robust thought. More powerful teaching and learning vocabulary is absolutely essential to learning. How can we make the teaching and learning of vocabulary so transparent, so compelling that students will be clamoring for richer, more diverse, and more specific ways to describe their thinking? How can we get students to demand more words? Research clearly shows that dictionary work is the least effective method of building long-term vocabulary. This cross content workshop will allow you to explore a dozen new ways to teach vocabulary and experience engaging word building activities. Materials will be provided for use in customizing strategies for your classroom use. Bring your own class word lists and a laptop to turn the today's instruction into tomorrow's vocabulary lessons. Resource materials will be provided and loaner laptops will be available.

#9225 Making Teaching and Learning Reading More Powerful
Wouldn't it be exciting to partner with your students in meeting challenging reading goals all across the content area? Imagine inviting students to dive deeper into texts and explore possible meanings with curiosity and enthusiasm. This workshop moves students' reading responsibility away from just recalling surface factoids into enjoying higher order thinking and personal engagement. In this workshop, teachers will learn how to make teaching and learning reading more visible, by more clearly defining challenging and important reading goals, involving students in assessing their mastery, and scaffolding them all through the process. Teachers can make teaching and learning reading more powerful. We know how most middle and high school kids read when they read: from the first letter of the first word in the first sentence to the last letter of the last word of the last sentence. Book closed. But can they tell you what they read? Can they connect the new information to information they already possess? One reason our students are not good a reader is simply because they don't know how to process written text in a way that will help them retain and apply. Oftentimes, they are not motive enough nor do they know how to persevere through challenging content. This workshop will offer research based approaches for teaching reading skills appropriate to text that will increase student motivational and raise student achievement. Bring your content textbook and a laptop. The goal is to turn today's workshop information into tomorrow's lesson plan. Laptops will be available to borrow, but some of the ideas we share you may want to capture and customize before the day ends.

#9219 Reading for Understanding: Four Strategies that Work
This workshop will focus on four of the best researched strategies available to teachers. These strategies work with both good readers and struggling ones. The four powerful strategies (predicting, summarizing, questioning, clarifying), known together as Reciprocal Teaching (RT), foster student participation, cooperative learning, and problem-solving, as well as student independence in tackling more difficult reading assignments. The best news is that teachers implementing Reciprocal Teaching have experienced significant growth in reading achievement. In his synthesis of 800 meta analysis, John Hattie ranks Reciprocal Teaching among the ten most powerful and visible impacts on student achievement. He finds that RT can advance students' learning by 2 years in one school year. How then can teachers afford not to use RT in their reading class? Many practical and innovative ways to implement the strategies will be addressed at each grade level. What you learn in today's workshop, you can use in tomorrow's lesson plans!

#9226 Making Writing More Powerful and Fun
How can we engage students in becoming better writers? How can we make the process so transparetn that students see the relevance of achieving challenging writing goals, become involved in mastering each of the steps along the way, enthusiastically own their successes, and willingly learn from their mistakes without shame? Writing is so closely aligned with thinking that improvement in writing ensures improvements in studetn achievement all across the curriculum. In addition, wirting can become an indispensable lifelong skill. Writing, however, can be intimidating, for teachers and students alike! This workshop will introduce and model approaches to writing instruction that will positively towards and otcomes of the writing process. Invention (prewriting), reading like a writer, crafting a draft, and polishing to high gloss will be among the day's topics. Additionally, the workshop will address ways to improve writing in all content area course and state tests, as well as the ACT/PSAE.
